Depiction & DepictionPrep both make use of Depiction’s simulation technology, letting you do rapid, basic simulations of various scenarios. The two programs do have some differences–DepictionPrep only includes disaster simulation elements, and the variables for many of those elements have been simplified. Both of them, though, provide the ability to quickly consider “what if” scenarios More >

Some of Depiction’s coolest simulation features make use of elevation data–floods, runoff, antennas and more. In the USA, we’re blessed with excellent elevation data available both from Depiction’s Quickstart and, in higher resolutions, as a download from the USGS.
Things have been a bit tougher elsewhere in the world–the ASTER-GDEM data is useful, but its distribution More >

The Small Business Add-on is an easy way to get started using Depiction for business purposes, from strategic planning to business continuity and more. We’ve put together a new tutorial on how to use the Small Business Add-on to map employees–though you can follow the same instructions to map employees without the add-on, or to More >

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake shook Indiana just north of Indianapolis this morning, apparently causing little damage. Read this article for more details. The USGS has data posted here, though it apparently hasn’t been reviewed yet. This makes the Formidable Footprint (January) and Great Shakeout (April) exercises coming up seem very well timed.

Depiction users may have noticed that the USGS imagery denoted as coming from “Terraserver” has been spotty recently–this includes the USGS topographic map, both tiling and Quickstart, the USGS Hi-Res Urban imagery, both tiling and Quickstart, and the USGS 1m satellite imagery Quickstart source. This occurred because Microsoft, which hosts that USGS imagery, recently changed More >

One question we get frequently from folks who are just seeing Depiction for the first time is “Is it just the US, or is it worldwide?” Depiction is certainly worldwide–wherever you have data for, Depiction will happily plot it.
Of course, one of the most useful parts of Depiction is our Quickstart data, and much of More >

Using Depiction to create and display floods requires having elevation data. The elevation data available through Depiction’s Quickstart resource list is from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) – it is their default “30 meter resolution” – in other words, every 100 feet or so, it measures the height of the terrain. In general, this More >

Thanks for providing these quick and informative tutorials. I especially like the Elevation Data Retrieval video on showing the steps to actually perform the download of the data from the USGS. These videos are very helpful for those of us not familiar with the step-by-step process of obtaining data for our depictions!
Thank you Kim!!!
